How to Claim, Remove and Re-Claim Google Custom URLs?

A custom URL is a short, easy to remember, share or according to brand name. It is much-needed when marketing your brand name. A website uses custom URL for branding purpose. Google offer their users to get custom URL for Google Plus and YouTube product. If you want to branding your business, you should get a nice, memorable custom URL. Remember, branding is so important for any business.

Requirements for Getting URLs

There are some requirements to get a custom URL. You can claim a custom URL if your account meet the general eligibility requirements. Requirements are as follows –

#Google Plus Requirements
  • You have ten or more followers
  • Your account is at least 30 days old
  • Your profile has a profile photo
  • Your account is in good standing (active)
#YouTube Requirements
  • Your channel has 100 or more subscribers
  • Your account is at least 30 days old
  • You have uploaded a channel icon
  • You have uploaded a channel art

Get Google Custom URLs

After completing general eligibility requirements, you can get custom URL. Follow the steps –

#Claim Google Plus Custom URL
  1. If your account is eligible, you will see a banner below your name on your Plus profile.
  2. Click on the link in the banner.
  3. You’ll see the custom URLs you can choose from. You may also need to add a few letters or numbers in the text box to make it unique to you. Please choose the best-one, you can’t change the URL later.
  4. Carefully read and understand the “Custom URL Terms of Use” and select the box to agree to them.
  5. Click on “Change URL”.
  6. When you’re ready to add your custom URL to your profile, click on “Confirm”.
#Claim YouTube Custom URL
  1. If your channel is eligible, you’ll see a notice in your advanced account settings, and may see a notification in your Creator Studio dashboard.
  2. Under “Channel settings”, select the link next to “You’re eligible for a custom URL”.
  3. You’ll see the custom URLs you can choose from. You may also need to add a few letters or numbers in the text box to make it unique to you. Please choose the best-one, you can’t change the URL later.
  4. Carefully read and understand the “Custom URL Terms of Use” and select the box to agree to them.
  5. Click on “Change URL”.
  6. When you’re ready to add your custom URL for your channel, click on “Confirm”.

Remove Google Custom URLs

Once you have a custom URL, your audience can reach your channel by using that custom URL. If you are satisfied with custom URL, do fun! In case you don’t satisfied with the claimed URL, you can remove it and you can claim a new-one (if eligible). You can remove, claim your custom URL up to 3 times a year.

Removing your custom URL will deactivate the URL so that it can no longer be used to direct people to your profile, and links containing your custom URL will no longer work. There are no separate process to remove custom URLs. The steps are as follows –

  1. On your computer, go to About me page after sign in.
  2. In the top right, click on account logo and select the account which you want to remove the custom URL for. You may have to click on “All your Brand Accounts” if your account is not in the list.
  3. You’ll see your current custom URLs under “Sites” and click on edit (pencil icon next to “Sites”).
  4. Will open a small window and you will see delete icon for each custom URL. Now click on delete icon which one you want to delete.
  5. Click on “Ok” for confirmation.

Re-Get Google Custom URLs

If you’re eligible, you can claim a new custom URL right away after removal, but it may take a couple of days before the previous custom URL stops directing to your channel.
